This is our first look at the next high-performance crossover of the people of Stuttgart. That seems to be the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 identified by the menacing black wheels with solid rubber lining that support the body of the four-door coupe. We say 2020 because the plebeian Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 will get a new look in 2019, which we have seen in previous spy photos.
Under the hood should be familiar AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, with the engine coupled to a 9-speed automatic all-wheel drive system and aft. The maximum power should be of the order of 603 horses, the same as that produced by the latest sedans E63 S and S63.
Designed to replace the current 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 this model comes with a hybrid configuration built around Mercedes’ new inline-6 engine. The inline-6, which will be a 3.0-liter turbocharged unit, will be delivered as standard with a lightweight hybrid system. The AMG version of the facility, however, will feature a reinforced electric motor to provide about 500 horsepower in total.
The new GLE will be a little larger than the current model and will have a more rounded shape similar to the smaller GLC-Class. There are wider headlights in the front, and the wheelbase certainly seems to be lengthened thanks to the new MRA platform on which it will ride. The AMG model shown here adds a bit more muscle to the design with a unique front grille and fascia, and maybe a little extra rocket for the wings, although the camouflage print on the body does a good job of hide these clues.
Inside, the GLE should have the glass cockpit found in the automaker’s latest batch of sedans. Despite the slightly larger design, the GLE should not add a third row of seats. What will be added is the power, especially for the AMG model. Expect a twin-turbo V8 that makes well over 500 horsepower, or perhaps a mild hybrid system. The management of this power will be a carefully re-tuned suspension that will give this performance crossover a much lower driving height than the standard model.
